Fishtail Braid
A fishtail braid is a popular braiding technique that creates a distinctive pattern resembling fish scales or a fish's tail. It is characterized by its intricate, woven appearance that looks more complex than it actually is. Unlike traditional three-strand braids, it uses a two-section technique that creates a herringbone or chevron pattern.

Common Applications
- Whips and floggers - Often used for the falls (striking portion)
- Decorative straps - Camera straps, guitar straps, bag handles
- Jewelry - Leather bracelets and necklaces
- Horse tack - Reins, leads, and decorative elements
- Belts and accessories
- Key Chains and lanyards
- Hair
Basic Technique
The fishtail braid is created by:
- Starting with an even number of leather strips (usually 4-8)
- Taking the outermost strip from one side and crossing it over to the opposite side
- Alternating sides and repeating the process
- The key is maintaining consistent tension and keeping the crossovers flat

Advantages
- Creates a strong, flexible finished product
- More decorative than simple braids
- Lies flat against surfaces
- Distributes stress well across multiple strands
