Welcome

Welcome to the HWL Blog. Today, we’re diving into the art of leather braiding. Whether you’re looking to create a stunning bag a unique keychain, a stylish bracelet, or necklace, leather weaving is a versatile skill that can elevate your designs.

Round Braid

This creates a cylindrical, rope-like cord that's incredibly strong and flexible. You work with 4,6,8 strands, typically crossing the outer strands over the centre ones in an alternating pattern. The result is smooth, even, and perfect for dog leashes, key fobs, or decorative pulls. It's surprisingly easy once you get the rhythm - right over centre, left over centre, repeat. The finished braid looks uniform from all angles and has excellent drape.

Diamond braid

This made by weaving multiple strands (typically 4,8, 12, 16, or more) in a specific over-and-under pattern around a hollow core or sometimes as a solid braid. The strands cross each other at regular intervals, creating the characteristic diamond or chevron pattern visible on the outside

Spiral Braid

Spiral Braid This technique creates a twisted, helical effect that is visually striking. There are different methods - you might use three strands and consistently favour one direction, or use specialized techniques that build in the twist. The spiral naturally wants to curl and creates beautiful organic curves, making it perfect for Jewelry, decorative elements, or artistic pieces where movement and flow are desired.
